What I Do...

I use color, design, contrast of light and shadow, to produce a picture. But what is it that will make this image of value to me? When I become sufficiently involved with my subject to forget myself, it can happen that the feeling of the moment, sun, air, light, even smell, sneaks in and becomes part of the canvas. To express a particular measure of time with any tool at hand, to really see what is before me, to capture that elusive something that makes art come alive, is my aim.

Printmaking gives me a chance to expand on this, to let an image evolve. Meaning and surface expand, content becomes multifaceted.

This is what I do, my challenge and joy, my passion.

Artist Biography

The following is an excert from a biography written by Brenda Lewis, reproduced with permission. You may also download the extended version as a microsoft word document.

Rich oil landscapes, charcoal life drawings, dark abstract prints and soft pastoral watercolours … After visiting her studio, former Guelph Mercury editor Bonnie Ewen described her best: “Baumgartner is so flexible that one would almost think that the works of several artists are on display.” No matter what medium or technique that she turns her hand to, Rosalinde Baumgartner absorbs herself in it with such wonder and so completely that she simply cannot help but master it.

Over the past 15 years, this evocative quality in her work has made her an award-winning favourite in juried, solo and group exhibitions across southern Ontario and Toronto. To name but a few: The McDonald Stewart Art Centre in Guelph, Art Gallery of Mississauga, Mississauga Living Arts Centre, Toronto Art Expo, Elora Centre for the Arts, and, both the Wellington and Dufferin County Museums. Her creative journey has also led her back to her native Switzerland, where Baumgartner was given the honour of participating in an exhibition titled “12 Artists from Canada”, commemorating the 700-year anniversary of Switzerland.

With an Honours degree in Fine Art (1990) from University of Guelph and numerous specialized courses in printmaking since, she has found that printmaking has captured her heart the most because it “lets the image evolve. Meaning and surface expand, content becomes multifaceted.” Unlike most printmakers, she does not make many copies of her prints, preferring to preserve the value of their uniqueness and rarity.

Baumgartner is an affiliate of the Image Matrix Printmakers Association, Visual Arts Ontario, and, the Art Gallery of Ontario. Her drawings have been published as accompanying illustrations in Jean Phillips Whiting’s book of poems: “Fate’s Child”, and, she is one of the artists featured in the The Elora Arts Council’s book titled “Profile”. Her works are currently on exhibit at the Barber Gallery in Guelph, Eldon Gallery in Waterloo, Cannington House Gallery in Oakville and the Burdette Gallery in Orton.
